Wychmere Harbor from the Inside

I have painted this harbor many times but always from the highway. This view is from the lookout at Snow Inn Rd toward the highway. It is an interesting perspective looking down on something. Your horizon line rises above the midline and leaves a lot of water to cover. There are still many boats in the harbor but I chose only a few and because it was mean low-tide put the red sail boat practically on the beach. There were lots of clouds on an overcast day.
I will do more from this perspective. It appears to me that looking up at something or looking down gives a more dynamic composition.

Wychmere Harbor, Harwich Port, MA

This is Wychmere yesterday with the warm sunny clear skies of fall. What a beautiful day to paint. I have struggled lately with my painting. I am usually good dealing with the tyranny of detail but seem to want everything in my picture when doing this scene. I have done it from memory and it is better done en plein air. The harbor is quite full of boats. I did a loose sketch and then went on to block out the sky. The water was last and I tried to do a gradual wash from bottom to lighter on the top. This is to bring the viewer's eye to the structures above. The entire scene is iconic around Harwich Port.

Up From the Beach

With the summer winding down and my grandchildren headed home, I can now ponder what their absence means. No more early mornings at the beach and no walks over the dunes. Every experience was new and 'the best' according to Theo, the spokesman. He is such a cool dude in his sunglasses, which he rarely removed.

I painted this picture while in the park selling my art. I love the effect of the sand. We are headed up to Wychmere from the beach.
